Babymoon in Savannah

When deciding upon a destination for our babymoon, we knew we wanted to visit a city we had never been to, and that we could explore together as a couple.  My main objectives included good food, relaxation/spa amenities, pretty views, and easy transportation while exploring… since I am not currently in the best shape of my life.  After some research and recommendations, we decided on Savannah, Georgia for our getaway.  Sayla was with her dad this week, and Patrick’s parents (Gigi and G-Pat), kept Pax for us so we could enjoy some quality time before the chaos begins of having a special needs child, and two under two years old (making that three in diapers).  Savannah ended up being the perfect choice.  The first thing we noticed was that this “urban jungle”, as the locals call it due to the insane number of trees, is a mix between Charleston, SC, and New Orleans, LA.  They consider themselves sister cities.  The absolute best part of Savannah were the people. Everyone was so nice. It was very southern in the way of people we met were not strangers and wanted to know, “Where are y’all from?” “What brings you to Savannah?” “Is this your first baby?” Those of you who know my husband can understand how he became a hit among the hotel staff immediately.  He told them we were there to make a baby (as I’m obviously showing and we have already achieved this goal).  Some of the staff saw us out and about town one evening and yelled, “Heyyyyy Parkers!” We felt very welcomed in this city.  Keep reading to find out where we ate, stayed, and played.

We stayed at the Mansion at Forsyth Park.  It is located right on the historic 10 acre park, and has several local coffee shops and restaurants within walking distance.  It is a quiet location.  The hotel features a restaurant and lounge, heated outdoor pool, art gallery, and spa.  It has a very eclectic and romantic feel.  Their sister hotel (Bohemian Hotel) is located on the river (exactly 1.2 miles away), which seemed to be the more happening, and busy area of Savannah.  The two hotels offered a complimentary shuttle back and forth twice an hour.  We utilized this service every day since the restaurants we dined at were closer to the riverfront.

That brings us to the most important part of our trip…food.  We took a lot of foodie recommendations from friends, family, and strangers.  Our main meals each day were brunch, and a somewhat early dinner, so we could sleep in, do an activity in between the two meals, and relax at night.

Brunch:

Huey’s – Features New Orleans cuisine on Savannah’s historic River Street.  Just say yes to the beignets.

Breakfast Club – Even though this restaurant is on Tybee Island, it has still been voted “Best Breakfast in Savannah” numerous times.  I ordered the waffle which ended up having a massive amount of cinnamon in the batter (not mentioned on menu) and I am allergic to cinnamon. So we had to make a second stop at another breakfast place so I could get a chocolate chip pancake…and avoid a hormonal meltdown.  The second restaurant had a good pancake but is not worth the mention. My husband did enjoy the food at the Breakfast Club though and would recommend it to everyone else in the world not concerned with cinnamon allergies.

Breakfast in Bed – For our last brunch, we took advantage of the room service at the hotel while lounging in bed. The best kind of brunch (except for the missing Mimosas).

Dinner:

Garabaldi’s  – This restaurant is beautiful and elegant.  It was a last minute recommendation and decision after Patrick vetoed Lady and Sons (I think he saw the buffet through the window and got scared even though everyone raves about the delicious food there).  Garabaldi’s described themselves as “festive and romantic” and I would agree.  They were able to seat us immediately, even without a reservation.  I had the Crispy Diamond-Scored Flounder, which was a full fish presentation, minus the head.  It was both scary and delicious.  My husband had the lasagna.  Very yummy!

The Olde Pink House – We had several people tell us to eat at this 18th century mansion, and it was our favorite by far!  The ambiance was perfect and food was delicious!  Unfortunately, we did not get any photos at this beautiful spot.  Dinner was wonderful and we shared a blackberry cobbler topped with lavender ice cream for dessert. Amazing!

Vic’s On the River – This restaurant is in a historic warehouse on the river and was built in 1859.  It was used for housing and planning during the Civil War.  We had a table by the window overlooking the river and were able to watch cargo ships float by into the Port of Savannah.  One of the ships was from Hong Kong, and another from Germany.  They carry thousands and thousands of cargo containers that are up to 20 feet long.  We each had filet mignon with amazing sides, and I do not think I have ever eaten so much in a single sitting in my entire life.

We took a half day and drove out to Tybee Island (about a 30 min drive) and spent some quality time on the beach together.  We haven’t been to the beach without a kid in a while, so we thoroughly enjoyed the relaxation as well as minimal beach gear!

We took a Savannah trolley tour one day and the history of the city was fascinating.  The tour was both informative and entertaining as they had performance re-enactors at different stops.

Other highlights from our trip included exploring Forsythe Park, eating at Leopold’s Ice cream, and walking down River Street.  It was the perfect getaway, and destination for our babymoon and we would recommend it to any couple seeking rest and relaxation with a reputation for great food.  Have you been to Savannah? What was your favorite eatery?  Please leave a comment below for those asking for additional recommendations.
