My best friend and her husband have a beautiful daughter, and for the longest time, their plan was to be “one and done.” They had a change of heart when their daughter was four years old, and were ready to try for their second. She started on prenatal vitamins, and scheduled and appointment to have her IUD removed. A week before that scheduled appointment, she was diagnosed with breast cancer.
While discussing her treatment options and what that meant for her fertility, she began to mourn the loss of their potential second child. She was told there was still a chance she could become pregnant after treatment with a drug called Zoladex, which would essentially cause her ovaries to go dormant. This would protect her eggs from chemotherapy. Even with this medication, fertility was not guaranteed. After beating cancer with multiple medications, and surgeries, she was given the go ahead to try and conceive. With months of high hopes and subsequently dashed hopes, her prayers were answered: she is having a baby BOY! I had the honor to host a baby shower for this miracle baby and Mama-to-be.
