Master Bedroom Reveal

So my original plan was to wait and reveal our master bedroom when it was completely finished.  This is going to take some time… which we don’t have right now since our baby number three arrives in 3 days… so my goal was to at least complete our bed, and of course I can’t wait for an entirely finished room to show you.  The bed should always be the focal point in a bedroom, and deserves its own post anyways.

We finally have a master bedroom in our new home that will fit a king-sized bed, and we decided this was our number one priority.  My goal was to have this king size bed set up and to have the bedding chosen and purchased before the third trimester of my pregnancy began since I started to get real large, was using a giant pregnancy pillow, and flopping around like a fish out of water.  It definitely needed to be done before the baby comes, since this is where I will be spending my time recovering post c-section, breastfeeding, and using the co-sleeper.  We barely made it happen just 2 weeks before the baby is due. Shew!!  My primary wish for our master bedroom was a canopy bed.  I just think there is something so romantic about a canopy bed.  This one is the Antonia canopy bed from Pottery Barn.  It was a custom order online, and took 12 weeks to arrive… longest wait ever.  I have since learned that most custom pieces of furniture take between 8-12 weeks for manufacturing and delivery, so remember this when furniture planning for your own space!  The headboard is a cream color, but called Oatmeal, and can be re-upholstered in the future, if we ever wanted to change things up.  We decided to go with the Purple mattress after hearing rave reviews from my brother and sister-in-law.  I can honestly say that it’s the most comfortable thing I have ever laid my body on in my entire life.  My husband tells me EVERY day how much he loves our comfortable bed.

We positioned the bed on the opposite wall of the entry door, so that it would be the focal point when you walk into the room.  There is one window on the left side of the bed and in an ideal world with endless renovation funds, I would have paid to have another window put in on the other side of the bed for symmetry.  Unfortunately, that is not in our budget, or timeline, so I decided to hang a large mirror above the nightstand, on the opposite side of the bed from the window, to help with visual weight and balance.  We left the wall color as it was when we moved in.  I was very tempted to paint it white as I tend to do in every room, but I was inspired by the rich and luxurious feeling of the Restoration Hardware-ish rooms with darker colored walls, so we went for it!

I would describe the design style of this room as classic with a global feel.  I try and use two to three complimentary patterns in each room I design.  I usually do a patterned rug, curtains, and/or throw pillows.  I chose the curtains first in this room to set my color scheme.  The curtain’s background color is the same color as the walls, with an elegant damask print overlay.  Curtains of course had to be blackout since they cover the French doors in the bedroom that lead out to the deck, which normally lets in a lot of light.

I love mixing metals, but have learned recently in my schooling that I “mix” too much.  So in this room I chose two main metals to be cohesive throughout the space.  The first is the dark oil rubbed bronze in the canopy bed, and then I chose a champagne gold metal for lighting.  The nightstands we purchased are from the Pottery Barn outlet, and the original hardware was a silver/pewter color.  This did not flow with the metals I had chosen for the design, so I spray painted the drawer handles to match the bed metal, and also ordered curtain rods in the same finish. I added the sheers to the canopy bed for an even more romantic feeling, but kind of feel like I’m sleeping with a mosquito net in the Sahara…what do y’all think?  Yes or no?
