Pax’s Big Boy Room

Since moving into our home two years ago, I have taken my time in decorating.  My goal has been to design each room individually, finish to completion, and stick to a budget.  I absolutely love designing my kids’ rooms.  Somehow, we got really lucky, and Pax did not decide to climb out of his crib until after he turned three years old this past January!  Once that happened, it was his turn to have his own space with a big boy design.

The room we chose for him in the home is really large, and I was struggling with the initial furniture layout, and creating separate spaces for sleep and play.  This prompted me to enlist the help of a true professional!  I came across an ad for a virtual interior design service, and decided to give it a try.  I am so glad I chose Havenly, to help with this space.  Havenly allows you to pick your personal designer, set a budget, create your space, and order all of the items for your room on one site.  I know, it’s amazing! This service is provided at a flat fee that is very affordable.  (See bottom of post for a referral code to get up to $50 off a design package – this is not a sponsored post.)

When the designer sent me the final layout design and products, I was obsessed.  Some of the furniture and art, we already owned.  I tweaked a few things in the design once I started to do the install, but overall the furniture layout is exactly what the designer planned for my vision of Pax’s Big Boy Room.

Pax is absolutely thrilled, and wants to show his new room to everyone that comes over.  He takes them around the room and says, “This is my bed that my mommy painted, this is my chair, this is my train table, and this is where I put my dirty clothes (hamper).” We’ve obviously been working on that task, haha! He also loves to turn his lamps on and off himself.  My favorite part of the room design is his play area with a train table and reading chair.  We used a rug to define this space for his activities. The other side of his room has his bed filled with comfy pillows for quiet time and sleep.  My mother-in-law got his bed at an estate sale, and I love that it has storage drawers underneath.  It was originally a cherry wood stain, but I painted it black using Annie Sloan chalk paint.  There are a few keepsake items in Pax’s room as well, including the wooden car on his dresser that my grandfather handmade for me and my brothers when we were little.  Pax has a whole collection of handmade wooden cars, trucks, and a train passed down from him.  The art above his dresser is an original piece that used to be in my husband’s room as a child, and his mom had saved it to one day hang in his child’s room.  It is entitled “Lucky Boy.” This piece is the most special of all.  My mother-in-law had it professionally matted and framed, and I spray painted the frame a matte black to better match the room’s color scheme.  Pax’s room has the most beautiful view of the pond behind our house, so we call his space the “corner office.” I have linked some of the actual products, and also some similar products that I could not find exact matches to online, that we used in his big boy room design.

I did not expect the tears to flow the first night Pax slept in his big boy bed. Did any of you also struggle with the emotions of having their baby transition from a nursery to a big kid room? Ugh.
