Sayla’s Handicap Accessible Bedroom Design and Decor

DIY and Decor

This has been my favorite room to design in our home by far.  If I could design handicap accessible children’s rooms exclusively, it would be a dream come true. I am by no means a professional, but this project of designing and decorating Sayla’s room has brought me so much joy.  I wanted the room to reflect Sayla’s bright personality and to just make you smile when you walk through the door, in the same way that she makes everyone smile.

The whole furniture layout was created around Sayla’s Sleep Safe Bed.  This bed is designed for special needs children and adults, to offer added protection against injuries, falls, and bed entrapment. It is similar to a hospital bed in that it has a remote which allows us to electronically raise and lower the head and/or knee section of the bed, and raise and lower her mattress.  The sides of the bed can be flipped down in order for us to reach Sayla for activities of daily living, and to transfer her to and from her wheelchair.  Her bed is centered on the wall so we are able to reach her from either side. We left ample space around her bed to be able to lower the sides, and to place both her wheelchair and her Hoyer lift next to bed for easy transfers.  Another piece of furniture which is a “must” in her room, is the twin sleeper convertible chair.  We needed a place for us to sit in her room while monitoring her, and also sleep in her room when she is requires extra attention through the night.  The color scheme was inspired by the peony floral decal on the wall, which was my inspiration for the design aesthetic around for the room.  I typically would have done a large rug in a room with hardwood flooring, but in this case with a wheelchair and other rolling equipment, it was better to do without.  Sayla loves her room, especially the view of the pond outside the french doors. She also loves her memory foam mattress, and smiles every time we put her into bed.  We are so blessed to have a home that was meant for our princess.
